Air India Flight AI-171 Crashes After Takeoff

Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025 — In one of the darkest days in Indian aviation history, an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner, operating as Flight AI-171, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The flight was en route to London Gatwick and was carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Authorities have confirmed that there appear to be no survivors.

A Devastating Incident

The flight took off at approximately 1:38 PM IST and lost contact with air traffic control just minutes later. The aircraft crashed into the BJ Medical College campus in the Meghani Nagar area of Ahmedabad, directly impacting a doctors’ hostel building. Fire and smoke quickly engulfed the wreckage, complicating rescue operations.

The crash not only resulted in the loss of everyone onboard but also caused injuries and potential casualties among residents in the hostel building. Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene of fire, smoke, and chaos as emergency services rushed to the site.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Emergency teams, including local police, fire departments, NDRF, and BSF units, responded swiftly. Hospitals across the city were placed on high alert, and ambulance green corridors were activated to facilitate rapid movement of critical care.

The Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in collaboration with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), has initiated a full investigation. International aviation bodies, Boeing, and GE (engine manufacturer) have also been notified. Initial concerns point to issues with takeoff configuration, including flap settings or landing gear malfunction.

Reactions from Leaders

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the tragedy, calling it “heartbreaking beyond words.” Support has poured in from around the world, including from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III, as over 50 British nationals were onboard.

Air India, meanwhile, has set up emergency support services for families of the victims and is cooperating fully with authorities.

A Historic Loss

This crash marks the first fatal hull loss of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since its introduction in 2011. Known for its advanced safety features and long-haul efficiency, the aircraft was considered among the safest in commercial aviation.

Our Thoughts and Prayers

As the country and the aviation community mourn, this incident is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of constant vigilance in aviation safety. Our deepest condolences go out to the families of all those affected.
